A three vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy 1 in Southern Friday completely shut down the northbound lanes for an extended period of time. The accident occurred just after 6 p.m., and traffic had to be rerouted down old U.S. 1 into downtown Southern Pines.

The driver of a transit van reportedly suffered a sudden medical event. A Dodge Ram 4500 work truck following the vehicle had to stop suddenly to avoid hitting the van. A Kia SUV following the Dodge Ram was unable to avoid a collision and slammed into the back of the truck causing extensive front end damage to the Kia.

The driver of the transit van was transported to the hospital for evaluation as well as the driver of the Kia.

The Southern Pines Police were on-scene and will be investigating the accident.

Responding to the accident were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, and Moore County EMS.
