Moore County Sheriff’s Department and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit teamed up Wednesday to seize $66,735 worth of marijuana in a wooded area of Carthage.

The marijuana plants were located by a North Carolina State Highway Patrol helicopter on property located in the 100 block of Plank Road, according to a news release from Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

“A consent search of the residence and property was conducted by deputies after locating the marijuana plants,” said the release.

Sixty-six-year-old Edwin Roy Leitch was charged with manufacture marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, maintain vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substances and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Deputies seized from the property 4,449 grams of marijuana, items of marijuana paraphernalia and $2,795 cash. The marijuana seized consisted of marijuana plants and processed marijuana in glass jars.

Leitch was placed under a $5,000 bond unsecured bond, has a September 25 court date and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
