A Carthage man was sentenced to 32-43 years in prison on Friday for rape of his estranged wife.

In a news release, District Attorney Maureen Krueger announced that a jury found Edward Lamont Womble, of Carthage, guilty of first degree rape, first degree sex offense, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, crime against nature, assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, assault on a female, and communicating threats.

The crimes took place in November 2015.

“An investigation into a possible abduction began when a neighbor found the estranged wife’s car and cellular telephone abandoned at his residence,” said Krueger in the news release. “The Sheriff’s office was alerted because Womble had threatened to kill his wife less than three weeks earlier.”

“It was soon discovered that Womble had driven from Randolph County to abduct the victim at gunpoint from her son’s bus stop. After taking her to a remote, secluded location, Womble committed the felony crimes against her. Womble released the victim when he became aware that law enforcement suspected that he had abducted her.”

Assistant District Attorneys Warren McSweeney and Peter Strickland prosecuted the case for the state.
