Danielle Shaw, R.N., has been recognized as the October 2018 DAISY Award Winner for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

Shaw is a nurse in Reid Heart Center at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, where she has worked for nearly three years. She was nominated by a coworker who, in the nomination, said, “Danielle recently cared for an elderly man who had been hospitalized for more than a month. The patient’s birthday was approaching and he had hoped to go home in time to celebrate. Unfortunately, the doctor advised the family that the patient would not be able to go home, as the patient’s wife was unable to provide the needed care, and the patient would need to be placed in a skilled facility.

“The patient’s children came from New York to visit and assist in moving their father. The patient had become depressed and talked repeatedly with the nurses about how much he had missed his dog since being hospitalized. Danielle researched Moore Regional’s policy on allowing pet visitations. She then got the appropriate permissions, and asked the patient’s wife to provide the necessary documents to clear the animal to visit.

“The patient was still hospitalized on his birthday, but received the best gift ever when he celebrated his birthday with his family and his beloved dog, Journey! His happiness spread through the unit and staff talked about it for days. Because Danielle took the extra moment to get to know her patient, she was able to meet one of his most basic but most important needs – she provided love!”

“By connecting with her patient, Danielle was able to provide so much more than just medical care for her patient,” says Karen Robeano, DNP, R.N., FirstHealth’s chief nursing officer. “I am proud to honor her with the October DAISY Award for her extraordinary care. This is a well-deserved honor.”

FirstHealth of the Carolinas, which includes Moore Regional Hospital, Moore Regional Hospital – Richmond, Moore Regional Hospital – Hoke, and Montgomery Memorial Hospital, recognizes an extraordinary nurse each month, and has since 2014. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was established by the Daisy Foundation, a not-for-profit, based in Glen Ellen, Calif. The foundation was started by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.

The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families. Today, there are more than 2,800 health care facilities in all 50 states and 17 other countries honoring their nurses with the DAISY Award.
