A driver died after crashing his car during a high speed police pursuit on U.S. Hwy 1 south of Aberdeen Friday evening.

Shonquell Davare Barrett, 22, of Aberdeen, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car had veered off the right side of the road and crash into a power pole and tree.

Barrett was in cardiac arrest and being administered CPR when emergency crews removed him from the vehicle.  He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:32 p.m. 

Barrett is the grandson of Taylortown Mayor Ulysses Barrett Jr.

Authorities cordoned off the accident scene

The chase originated on Morganton Road in Southern Pines when the vehicle reportedly failed to stop at at checkpoint State Highway Patrol had set up. The chase ensued and went through Pinehurst, down Highway 5 to Sandpit Road, and eventually onto US Hwy 1 where the chase ended in a crash at approximately 10:20 p.m. 

The entire area was cordoned off, and investigators with the State Highway Patrol are investigating the wreck.
