A motorist was seriously injured when his vehicle struck a tree on U.S. Highway 1 in Southern Pines Wednesday evening.
The driver of a Ford Focus was headed south on U.S. Highway 1 when he ran off the right hand side of the road at the ramp leading onto Pennsylvania Avenue. The man’s car slammed into a tree just off the road.
Emergency crews called for a helicopter to airlift the patient to a trauma center, but they could not fly due to the weather conditions. The patient was then transported by ambulance to Firsthealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst.
The car suffered extensive damage, and a roadway sign was also damaged in the accident.
The southbound ramp onto Pennsylvania Avenue was shut down while emergency crews worked. Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident and did not release the victim’s name or state of condition.
Responding to the accident were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Police, and Moore County EMS.
