A Hoke Correctional Institution inmate who escaped six months ago is back in custody.

Halifax County Sheriff’s Deputies and Roanoke Rapids Police Officers captured Cul Priest Jones in Roanoke Rapids on Friday morning, according to North Carolina Department of Safety.

Jones “was found standing on a street corner,” said NC DPS. “Jones, 45, fled on foot when officers approached and was apprehended. He was taken for medical attention for non-life threatening injuries.”

Prison officials said Jones was reported missing on Oct. 14 from the Raeford prison.  He had been serving a burglary sentence since 2014 and was to be released in 2023.

Jones has been tied to crimes in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland.

The governor’s office announced last week a $10,000 reward for help in capturing Jones.

Jones also escaped prison in 1995 when he was serving a sentence for shooting a sheriff’s detective.

He is originally from Halifax County.
