A truck pulling a trailer loaded with hay was consumed by fire Wednesday just as the work day ended on U.S. 1 in Vass. The driver was uninjured, but the red Ford F250 dually suffered heavy damage from the fire in front of Bob’s Pizza.

Both northbound lanes were shut completely down. Northbound traffic was diverted down Youngs Road. At one point, both lanes were at a near standstill with cars backed up all the past Hyland Hills Golf Course just outside Southern Pines.

Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue was initially paged to battle the fire, but another tanker was paged out from Southern Pines Fire & Rescue.

It took some time for the fire to be extinguished due to the large hay bales, said Retired Cypress Pointe Firefighter, Frank Staples.

“Hay is like baled pinestraw in that it has to be spread out before it can be extinguished,” said Staples.  “There were also a few spot fires started by the burning hay that we had to put out.”

It is unclear how the fire ignited.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the NC Highway Patrol.
