Southern Pines Police arrested a man Wednesday night after a report of a suspicious person at the Pinebrook Apartments on West Illinois Avenue.

While the police were investigating the report, “A suspect fired a firearm and then fled the area in a vehicle at a high rate of speed. The investigating officers followed this suspect and vehicle, subsequently stopping the suspect in the 1300 block of West Pennsylvania Avenue,” said Southern Pines Police Department.

Khiry Jamol McNeill, 27, of Fayetteville, was arrested without incident and taken to the Moore County Detention Center where he was placed under a $150,000 bond.

Police found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and marijuana in the suspect’s possession. McNeill was charged with carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana.

A follow-up investigation determined that McNeill was a convicted felon and is currently on probation for this prior felony offense.

“The Southern Pines Police Department will be working with our Federal law enforcement partners, specifically the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, to conduct a history trace on the recovered firearm to determine if additional charges need to be filed against Khiry Jamol McNeill locally, or in the Federal Criminal Justice System,” said Southern Pines Police Captain Charles Campbell.

McNeill has a November 14 court date and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
