EMS and fire units responded to Martin Park, in Southern Pines, on Sunday morning after a man fell and was injured. The man was in the park with his dog when he suffered a fracture to his upper leg.

According to an eyewitness, the man slipped on a tree root when a Great Dane puppy bumped into him.

Witnesses immediately called 911. Due to the extent of his injuries, a life-flight helicopter was called but was unable to fly due to weather.

The victim was deep in the woods, so Southern Pines Fire & Rescue responded to extricate the victim from the area.

A fire department pickup truck was brought down the wooded trail but suffered a blown tire from a pipe in the trail. A man who was at the park then used his pickup truck to carry the victim and personnel safely back to the waiting ambulance.

The victim was transported to Firshealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst for care. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
