Elliott Clarence Funderburk, long-time resident of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 1, 2018. He was the loving and proud father of two daughters, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Pierce Funderburk and Annie Suelee McManus Funderburk and siblings Jason B. Funderburk, Annie Mildred Funderburk Tucker, Angie Funderburk Rhodes, Robert Lee Funderburk, Louise Funderburk Cameron, Sara Funderburk Hobson and James S. Funderburk.
Elliott was a Korean War veteran and a retired tool and die maker. He was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, however, spent his youth growing up in Olivia, North Carolina. He moved to Southern Pines in 1964. Prior to moving to Southern Pines, he lived in Sanford and was one of eleven individuals who organized the Lee County Rescue Squad. This was his passion at the time, as he wanted to assure Lee County had a rescue unit. He was a long time member of the Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Gwen Page Funderburk; daughters Kathy Funderburk White (Bobby) of Kernersville, Leigh Funderburk Formyduval (Davy) of Whispering Pines; grandchildren Brandon Page Formyduval, Jonathan Edward Formyduval, Brooke White Kensmoe (Jake); Cameron White Wood (Joey), Chelsea White and great-grandchildren Matthew James Kensmoe, Hailey Elizabeth Kensmoe, Sophia Page Wood, Remington “Remy” Faith Wood, Ryley Landon Norton and Cannon Cash Formyduval.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Blessing Bag Ministry at Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at the Southern Pines United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 11:00 am, officiated by pastors Tommy Sweeney and Charles Albright.
The family will receive friends at a reception following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service will be held at the Cameron Cemetery (behind the Cameron Presbyterian Church) in Cameron, North Carolina.
Elliott’s final words to family and friends are that you continue to live your lives to the glory of God and that as you do so, you will remember the value of time, the success of perseverance, the pleasure of working, the dignity of simplicity, the worth of character, the power of kindness, the influence of example, the obligation of duty, the wisdom of economy, the virtue of patience, the improvement of talent and the joy of God.
