Dorothy Burns, age 87, passed away on April 16, 2019 surrounded by her family, friends, and loving care givers.

She was born in Winston-Salem, NC, to the late Robert J. Burcham and Ora J. Smith where she was the oldest of six children. Married to the late Robert (Bob) C. Burns of Southern Pines, NC, she is survived by her children, Robert (Bob) C. Burns, Jr. and his wife Janell N. Burns of Southern Pines, NC, Rebecca B. Watson and her husband Henry A. Watson of Savannah, Ga., and Christine B. Fowle and her husband, Sam R. Fowle, IV also from Southern Pines, NC. She is additionally survived by three granddaughters, Elizabeth C. Fowle, Laura A. Burns, and Shannen M. Burns.

Dorothy and her husband started their life together in the Sandhills by opening a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, where she worked running the front-of-house while Bob ran the kitchen, until a work opportunity relocated the family east to Washington, NC for several years. Upon returning to the area in the early 1980’s to take care of her husband’s mother, Mabel K. Burns, Dorothy took a job at the Pine Needles Resort where she worked in the accounting offices for several decades before retirement. She spent her later years with her grandchildren, volunteering at church, and attending the Senior Enrichment Center. Dorothy, dedicated to her family and grandchildren, loved the beach, gardening, hosting family meals, and keeping everyone straight by always reminding them that “can’t never could do anything”.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 200 East New York Ave., Southern Pines, NC on Tuesday, April 23, at 11am with Dr. David Helms officiating. A reception will be hosted at the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial contributions be made to Magnolia Gardens Assisted Living, 594 Murray Hill Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387 where Dorothy recently resided.
