Helga K. Hawkins, 101, of Southern Pines passed away at her home on Tuesday, April 10th.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Hubbardston, MA.

Born in Gardner, MA on August 22, 1916 she was the daughter of the late Aati and Rauha Laitinen. Helga had worked for the U.S. Army as a Directorate of Civilian Personnel at Ft. Devens from the mid 1960’s until her retirement in 1983. In 2002, she moved to Southern Pines. Helga was a volunteer Toymaker for FirstHealth. She loved being a grandmother and was a passionate Boston Celtics fan, rarely missing a game. Her secret to a long life is to “live happy”.

Helga is survived by son Al Hawkins, wife Ronda, of Southern Pines, son Richard Hawkins, wife Laura, of Comanche, TX and was preceded in death by daughter Melinda Hawkins. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Sierra, Robert and Brian Hawkins.
