Joe was born on September 27th, 1938 in Rockingham, North Carolina to the late Richard D. Motes, and Etta Mae Motes. His childhood years were spent in Rockingham, up until he graduated Richmond Senior High School, and left to join the Air Force, where he was stationed in Alaska, making him an honorable Veteran. After a few years and returning home, he went and worked for a gas company, North Carolina Natural Gas, and spent his time coaching baseball teams.

Eventually he began working at the Pinehurst Hotel, and retired after 36 years of remarkable service. He was known for his love of golf, always being outside, Gospel music, and most importantly, his family. He was not only an amazing husband and father, but an unbelievable Papa.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Guion Motes; siblings, Tommy Motes, Barbara Motes Coon; children, Jodi Motes Ramos, Richard D. Motes III, Janice Motes Yarborough, and Brandy Motes Johnson, followed by 11 beloved grandchildren, and one great-grand child. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard D. Motes, and Etta Mae Motes, siblings, Margarette Motes, Katie Motes Wentland, Clifford Motes.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 20, 2018 at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Aberdeen with Rev. Horace Warwick officiating. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Aberdeen. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
