Mary Louise Claxton Smith died in the early morning hours of October 12, 2018 with family by her bedside.

Mrs. Smith was born July 26, 1929 in Mattoon, Illinois to Alvie J. and Earlene Claxton. She graduated from Boston University in 1951 and married the Reverend Dr. William E. Smith that same year. They were married 63 years until his death in 2014.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity, P.E.O., the Garden Club of the Sandhills, the College Club, and served on the Foundation Board of First Health.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William E. Smith, son, Craig Claxton Smith, brothers, Robert F. Claxton and Richard Allen Claxton, brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Hazel Smith, and sisters-in-law, Connie Claxton and Clara Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Janet C. Smith, son-in-law, Gregory C. Wood, grandchildren Christopher C. Broughton, Rebecca and Daniel Murdock, Emily and Jason King, and Caleb Wood, nieces and nephews Nancy Almacy, David Almacy (Julie), Jennifer Randall (Corky), Pamela Moffatt, Julia Smith (Steve Miller) and Richard Claxton (Ranee).

Per Mrs. Smith’s wishes, no service is planned. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Penick Village Foundation, 500 East Rhode Island Avenue, Southern Pines, 28387. 

Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.
