Patricia (Pat) Ann VanCamp, daughter of the late Kenneth Andrew and Verdie Ritter Caddell, died at her home in Southern Pines on Thursday, October 31, 2019, at the age of 89.

She was born September 15,1930 in Pinehurst, NC. Pat grew up around horses and along with her younger sister Edith “Faye” Caddell Sadler, worked with their mother running the Caddell riding stable that was a staple of the Sandhills horse riding community for many years.  She attended Notre Dame Academy in Southern Pines, and later graduated from Southern Pines High School in 1948. For the next two years, Pat attended Meredith College.

On July 1, 1950, Patricia Caddell married the late Stephen (Steve) VanCamp at St Anthony of Padua Church in Southern Pines. They had five children. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Lahar and husband Michael of Mooers, NY; sons Paul Van Camp and wife Janet of Cameron; Peter Van Camp and wife Mari of Southern Pines; Stephen Van Camp and wife Martha of Tampa, FL; Kenneth Van Camp and wife Carrie of King George, VA; 21  grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceasing her are a sister, Faye Sadler; a grandson, Paul Stephen; and a great-grandson Andrew James.

After her youngest child was in school, Pat got her certification as a nursing assistant and worked for several years at the Penick Retirement Home and later Moore Regional Hospital.  In the early 1980’s, along with her husband Steve, they started in the newspaper delivery business and had the opportunity to introduce delivery of USA Today newspaper to the Sandhills.

Pat will be remembered for her loving spirit and generosity with her time and money. A lifelong wordsmith, Pat enjoyed doing crossword puzzles or playing Boggle with her family.  She was a card carrying member of the grammar police and she wore the badge with honor. Her vegetable garden and weekly bridge games kept her active even as her health declined. She was a devoted member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church, a long time member of the church choir.

A memorial Mass will be at 1:00 PM Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Burial will be directly following the Mass at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
