Raye Grubbs, 98 of Seven Lakes, passed away on November 11, 2018 at Whispering Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville.

Born on April 30, 1920 in Raleigh, NC to the late Percy and Florence Barbour. She spent her early years in Alexandria and Williamsburg, VA. During World War II she lived in San Francisco, CA and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After the war she opened her own Ladies Specialty Store; called Raye’s of Westover in N. Arlington, VA while attending night classes at Columbia University to further her knowledge in Fashions in Merchandising. She was very active in community service in Arlington County. After 17 years of operating her own store, she accepted the position as Dress buyer for Joseph R. Harris Co. in Washington, D.C. to buy for four stores. She also assisted the family owned Company opening a total of 27 stores and left as Mdse. Manager seventeen years later when Brooks Bros. and Julius Garfunkel’s bought the Company. 

After a couple of months vacationing, she decided she was too young to retire and took a crash course in Real Estate at Maryland University in College Park, MD and worked for 10 years, winning many awards. She always said she was good at everything she tried except golf, but loved the game. Raye build her home in Seven Lakes in 1987 and loved the area and all the people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister, Ruby Revels and brother, Sherwood Barbour. She is survived by one nephew, Jerry Revels and many loving friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 3:00PM at the Chapel in the Pines in Seven Lakes.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Americas Catholic Church in Candor, NC or EMS of Seven Lakes or a charity of your choice.
