Richard Michael Murphy, 80, passed away December 23, 2018. He was born on December 6, 1938 in Racine, WI to Richard and Anne (Whirl) Murphy, who preceded him in death.

Richard served his country for almost 30 years. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1960 at Harlingen AFB in Texas. His first assignment was at Dover AFB, DE as a 2nd Lieutenant. His assignments included Kirkland AFB, NM, Yakota AFB, Japan, Tan Sun Nhut AFB, Vietnam, Travis AFB, CA, and Scott AFB, IL. He returned to Dover AFB in May of 1982 where he took over as base commander. In 1985, he taught ROTC at Louisiana Tech University. After that, he went again to Scott AFB, for his final assignment and retired in 1989 as a Master Navigator. During his career, he moved 21 times before being selected upon retirement to teach ROTC at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, NC. Mike enjoyed golfing with friends, traveling with his wife in their motor home, and visiting family. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Southern Pines where he was president of his Sunday school class.

Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years Dorothy (Fox) Murphy, his siblings Bill Murphy, Kevin (Martha) Murphy and Sheila (John) Haxton. Also his children Mark Murphy, Marsha Newton and Melissa Ellison, grandchildren Laura Lopez, Travis Newton, Alexandra Ellison, Samantha Ellison and Reagan Ellison, and great grandson Camden Newton.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Southern Pines on January 12th at 2pm. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. David Helms.
