Royal Armstead Stutts, 93 of Southern Pines, passed away on April 7, 2018 at Quail Haven in Pinehurst.

Royal was born on February 12, 1925 in Hoke County to the late Royal and Sarah Stutts.

Royal proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He served in Normandy, North France, Rhineland and Central Europe during his military service. He was stationed in Salzburg, Austria after the armistice. After the war, Royal cut timber, delivered furniture, ran a sawmill, and operated a family nursery. After his retirement, Royal and his wife, Joyce moved to Southern Pines Gracious Living where he made many friends and enjoyed the everyday interaction with all those that live there.

He was a longtime, faithful and active member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1946. He was also active in the Gideon’s. Royal was involved with the Boy Scouts and helped form two new troops in the area. He loved driving, telling jokes and stories, all things aviation, peanuts, animals, his tractor, outdoors, gardening, traveling and most of all, sharing time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce Stutts; two children, Jackie Stutts Hayter (Robert) of Independence, VA and Catherine Stutts Jackson (Bobby) of Newalla, OK; he is also survived by four grandchildren, Chris and Conrad Hayter, Kelly Brown and Kevin Jackson, and six great grandchildren, all of whom affectionately referred to Royal as “Dee”.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 3:00PM at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church.
