Vera Lee Horner McClive, aged 81, of Pinehurst, NC, passed away on May 28, 2019 at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines, NC.

Vera was born on March 11, 1938 to the late Lillian F. Horner and George A. Horner of Buffalo, NY and attended nursing school at University at Buffalo, where she also received her Master’s degree.  She would later earn a second Master’s at Syracuse University and, not done, a third from East Carolina University.

Soon after marrying and having children, she and her family moved to Syracuse, NY in 1966 and then to Wilson, NC in 1976.  She has stayed a happy North Carolinian since, living in Pinehurst since 2003.  Vera was an Assistant Professor at Barton College’s nursing school in Wilson, and was later the Health Education Coordinator for Nash County public schools.

Vera’s focus in life was combining nursing and education.  She loved such other subjects as genealogy and the inevitable, numerous, accompanying family stories, M*A*S*H reruns, any movie based on WWII (really, anything), shih tzu dogs, and cardinals.  She had strong views on the role of women in society, the transformative value of education, and the accessibility of medical care.  She relished her opportunities to travel to many foreign countries, especially after retirement when she seemed to be always in London attending the theatre.  She was an active regular at her neighborhood clubhouse and her church and has been long-renowned for her giant chocolate-chip cookies.  When she lived in your neighborhood, you knew her.

Vera is survived by her two children Betsy McClive Land (Howard), of Sanford, NC, and R. Thomas McClive III (Hsiang-Ting) of Silver Spring, MD, and by one grandson, Jake Marion Young of Sanford, NC, along with three sisters, numerous nieces and nephews, and a great many former students.

A memorial service will be eventually scheduled at First United Methodist Church in Pinehurst.  In lieu of flowers, please plant one, fill a bird feeder, or make donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National Headquarters, 6520 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309-2132.
