One person was airlifted after a serious accident at the corner of Murray Hill Road and U.S. 1. Emergency crews were dispatched at 6:15 pm to what is now the second serious accident at that intersection in just over 2 weeks.

A black Ford Ranger pickup truck was headed south and turning left onto Saunders Boulevard when it collided with a gold colored Chevy sedan headed north on U.S 1.

The impact caused extensive damaged to both vehicles and left debris scattered in the roadway from the back of the pickup truck. All four people in the Chevy sedan required medical care with one person being airlifted to a trauma center with critical injuries. The other occupants were transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured as well as his dog that was in the passenger seat.

Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

The wreck initially shut down the entire intersection, but traffic was slowly rerouted through the area. Aberdeen Police Department also had officers controlling traffic flow to the area at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Pinehurst Avenue.

Responding to the accident were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Police Department, and Aberdeen Police Department.
