Shoemaker was initially pinned in the vehicle unconscious and a medivac helicopter was called. Emergency crews used hydraulic tools to gain access to the driver.

While being extricated from the vehicle, his condition deteriorated and CPR was started at the scene. This necessitated the cancellation of the helicopter, and the victim was transported to the hospital just down the road. The elderly man was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Moore Regional. The drivers of the other two vehicles did not require transportation to the hospital.
