A man was killed Saturday evening when he was hit by an Amtrak train in downtown Southern Pines.  The 23-year-old man, from Southern Pines was struck just before 11:00 p.m. on the Broad Street train tracks. The victim was identified as 23 year old Dylan Patrick Gesme from West Illinois Avenue  in Southern Pines.

Authorities investigated the scene at the railroad crossing at Massachusetts Avenue.

The southbound train carrying passengers left the Southern Pines Train Station moments before hitting the victim. The train conductor repeatedly sounded the horn when he saw the pedestrian, according to the Southern Pines Police.

The man did not move from the tracks, and the train was unable to stop before striking the victim.

The body was located more than a 100 feet down the tracks from the initial impact.  

This is the second time a pedestrian was killed by a train in a month.  Herbert Bullard, 51, of Pinebluff, died September 7 when he was struck by a train near Midway Road in Aberdeen.

Southern Pines Police Department is investigating the accident, and Amtrak is doing an internal review as well. Southern Pines Fire and Rescue assisted the police department at the scene.
