Former Cy Young Award winner Jim Perry and Grady Little, who has managed the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, will lead off a fundraiser on Oct. 29 to provide relief for St. Joseph of the Pines colleagues adversely affected by Hurricane Florence.

The free luncheon hosted by the SJP Foundation is open to the public and will start at 11:30 a.m. in the Fordham Room at Belle Meade in Southern Pines.

“Jim and Grady have so many incredible baseball stories to tell,” said Caroline Eddy, director of development at St. Joseph of the Pines. “You will be in for a real treat if you attend this fundraiser.”

Perry pitched from 1959-1975 for four teams, won 215 career games, was a three-time All-Star, and earned the 1970 American League Cy Young Award, when he posted a record of 24-12 for the Minnesota Twins.

Perry and his younger brother, Gaylord, are the only brothers in Major League history to win Cy Young Awards. They trail only the Niekro brothers – Phil and Joe – for career victories by brothers.

Little managed the Red Sox from 2002 to 2003 and the Dodgers from 2006 to 2007. In his second season with the Red Sox, Little guided the team to a record of 95-66 and an appearance in the 2003 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.

Despite his accomplishments, Little is best remembered for his decision to leave starting pitcher Pedro Martinez in the eighth inning of Game 7 while the Red Sox held a three-run lead. Little then faced blame for the team’s subsequent loss when the Yankees were able to tie the score and win the game in extra innings to advance to the World Series.

“Between the two of us, I’m sure Jim and I can get an audience going and keep them intrigued,” Little said. “We have plenty of stories. We’re happy to share them while helping to raise funds for a great cause.”

Please RSVP to Eddy at (910) 246-3145 or [email protected].

“Seating is limited,” she said. “No charge for the lunch, but bring your check book to help provide hurricane relief.”
