Pinecrest cashes in on Coach Metzger as he wins the US Cellular’s Most Valuable Coach contest Tuesday. Pinecrest High School will receive the top prize of $50,000 and a Samsung Tech prize package valued at $30,000.

The Pinecrest High School Football Coach was selected as one of the top 50 nominees in September.  By making it to the final 15 coaches in October, Metzger won $5,000 for Pinecrest High School where he was honored at the school during an award presentation.

“Coach Metzger is a valuable member of the Southern Pines community, and he’s had a tremendous impact on the football program,” said US Cellular on its website. “He has impacted the lives of his athletes in a positive way. He has encouraged them to be respectful, responsible and successful on the football field as well as off of it. He places a high value on integrity and faith, and he encourages his players to grow.”

Metzger won through community online voting and a panel of judges. Metzger was neck and neck for first place with Track and Cross County Coach Matt Chance from Bowling Green, Missouri who took home second place. Softball Coach Sarah Williams of Hodgdon, ME won third place.

“The $80,000 prize will enable us to expand a reading outreach for our elementary school students,” said Assistant Principal Herb Hanson on the school’s Facebook page in October.  “It will also help us to build a lunch area dedicated to helping unify our student body through a ‘No Student Eats Alone’ program.”

Metzger has been coaching the Patriots since 2007 and has become the winningest coach in school’s history.
