This was the ending the last time Union Pines and Pinecrest met in a football game.

The 2010 game ended in a bench-clearing brawl resulting in a nine-year hiatus on football games between the two high schools.

That ends this Friday when the rivalry resumes with Pinecrest visiting Union Pines. At a Press Conference held at Sizzling Steak or Eggs Monday, players and coaches from Union Pines and Pinecrest spoke about the renewed rivalry.

Union Pines coach Lonnie Cox talked about the discipline of his team and how that was a tremendous strength.

Pinecrest Coach Chris Metzger spoke about his team’s commitment to servant leadership and how that means players put others before themselves.

Both coaches talked about a commitment to sportsmanship, and how they were looking forward to the game saying it will be good for the county as well as the individual schools.

After the press conference, players from both teams enjoyed breakfast together before returning to classes.

Union Pines is coming off a 33-3 victory over North Moore High School. The Vikings have a 2-1 record on the season. Pinecrest Patriots defeated RJ Reynolds 52-14 last week and have a 3-0 record this season.

The non-conference contest will start at 7:30 p.m.
