Community leaders and residents gathered Friday morning to break ground on a new community center in Pinehurst.

People congregated under a large tent to seek shelter from the storm while the Village Council took to their shovels for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The nearly 20,000-square-foot center is being built at Cannon Park near the corner of Rattlesnake Trail and Hwy 211.

The facility will house programs for all age groups and will include a full-size gymnasium with court lines for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, a multi-purpose room, various classrooms for programs and activities, offices for Parks & Recreation staff, restrooms, storage, and a small concession/catering kitchen.

The Village is building the $4.9 million center debt free and is expected to open in 10 – 12 months.
