A chicken truck overturned Monday on Midland Road at the insection of Highway 22 in Southern Pines. The driver was attempting to travel through the new traffic circle.

Midland Road was blocked just after 4 p.m. as a tow truck from Rockwell Towing was responding to the accident.

According to Southern Pines Police, a truck was dispatched to pick up the surviving chickens to take them to their destination.

The driver was not injured and police expected Midland Road to re-open by 6 p.m.

The new traffic circle and improvements to the nearby Midland Road interchange with U.S. 1 was a $2.8 million summer construction project to improve safety, where traffic is expected to nearly double to an average of 28,000 daily trips by 2040.

Southern Pines Police and Fire and Rescue responded to the accident.
