All 2018 graduates of the Surgical Technology program at Sandhills Community College passed the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTST) Certification of Surgical Technologists (CST) exam in August.

Each of the 14 has been certified as Surgical Technologists, demonstrating that they meet the national standard for knowledge underlying surgical technologist practice.

The graduates have proven that they have mastered a broad range of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique, and patient care. Becoming certified exhibits confidence in their education, pride in the profession, the desire to be recognized for mastery of scientific principles, as well as an ongoing commitment to quality patient care.

Certification is often a condition for employment, a means for upward mobility, a route to higher pay, and a source of recognition nationwide. They are now authorized to use the title CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) as long as they maintain certification currency.

The 2018 Sandhills grads found employment at First Health of the Carolinas, Wake Med, Pinehurst Medical Clinic, Scotland Memorial Hospital, Eye Surgery Center of the Carolinas, Central Carolina Hospital, Gulf Breeze Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, and various other facilities.

The outlook for surgical technologist jobs in North Carolina is expected to increase by 15.4% in the next ten years, 3.2% in the next two.
