One person was injured after their vehicle overturned in an accident on South May Street in Southern Pines Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened at the intersection of May Street and Illinois Avenue at 12:30 pm. The small SUV was crossing May Street when it was struck by a white pickup truck heading north on May.

The impact caused the SUV to roll over onto its side and coming to a stop into some bushes beside the roadway on Illinois. The female driver of the SUV was entrapped, and firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to remove the roof of the vehicle to extricate the driver.

The driver escaped with what is believed to be minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Moore Regional for further treatment. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured, and the truck had only minor damage.

The accident shut down east Illinois Avenue and May Street in the area of the accident, and traffic was rerouted. Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Police Department, and Moore County EMS.

This is the second accident this weekend that Sandhills Sentinel reported.  Yesterday, an elderly Pinehurst man died from a three-car accident in Pinehurst on 211.
