Highway 5 in Pinehurst was shut down Sunday evening for several hours after a truck hauling vehicles struck the overhead railroad trestle with the cargo. The trailer overturned and dumped the vehicles onto their sides in the road. No one was injured in the accident.

The truck was carrying two Mercedes Minibuses for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz National Championship Finals being held this week in Pinehurst. Pinehurst Resort staff were on the scene surveying the damage.

The are several signs posted leading up to the underpass showing a height restriction of 13 feet. The first van caught the trestle causing the trailer to overturn in the roadway.

It took several hours to clear the wreckage from the road. Rockwell Towing responded to the scene with a large wrecker and a second rollback wrecker in order to remove the vehicles.

Inspectors with the Aberdeen, Carolina and Western Railway were notified and responded. They could be seen walking the railroad tracks and inspecting the bridge to determine if there was damage.

Traffic was rerouted while crews worked to clear the scene.

Responding to the scene were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Pinehurst Police.
