Two 82nd Airborne Paratroopers were killed overseas on August 13th.   Sergeant Allen L. Stigler Jr., 22, of Arlington, Texas, and Sergeant Roshain E. Brooks, 30, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died from wounds sustained while engaging in combat operations in Iraq, according to officials.

A Pentagon spokesperson said a mishap occurred while an artillery unit was firing on an Islamic State mortar position, and the incident was not due to enemy contact. The incident is under investigation.

The paratroopers were cannon crew members who were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. This was Sgt. Stigler’s first combat deployment, and this was Sgt. Brooks first deployment to Iraq.

“Sergeant Brooks and Stigler were courageous patriots and Paratroopers who served our coalition and the people of Iraq with extraordinary commitment,” said Col. Pat Work, commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division’s, on their Facebook page.  “Our team extends its most sincere condolences to their Families and friends. Their personal commitments to our campaign against ISIS were extraordinary and we are incredibly proud to have served with them.”
