It was a beautiful day in Southern Pines, N.C. for the first round of the Carolinas Women’s Club Team Championship. Fair weather and great course conditions paved the way for low scores in the opening round of the championship. Three teams in the Championship Flight are tied at the top of the leader board with an aggregate score of five-under-par 139.

Defending champion Pinehurst Country Club posted a 68-71–139 to start their title defense. The side of Patty Moore-Donna Tanner had the low score of the day at 68, recording five birdies in the two-woman captain’s choice format. Kendra Muir-Sally Means finished under par as well, carding four birdies en route to a one-under-par 71.

Pinehurst Country Club returned three of their four players from 2017’s champion team, but added 19-time CGA champion Patty Moore to the roster.

Hot on the defending champion’s heels are 2017 runner-up Cowans Ford Country Club and Pine Needles Golf Club.

Cowans Ford CC returned three of four players from their 2017 roster. The side of Kathy Binkley-June Wang led the way for CFCC with a three-under-par 69 and four birdies on the card. The side of Peg Brady-Robbie Knotts finished with a two-under-par 70.

Pine Needles Golf Club is competing in the event for the first time and had a great opening round.

The side of Susan Beaupied-Dokim Elphick finished with a three-under-par 69 which complemented a two-under-par 70 from the side of Maureen Buck-Therese St. Peter. Pine Needles Golf Club’s home court advantage must have played a factor on the tough Donald Ross layout of their sister club.

In the Carolinas Division, Colonial Country Club leads the way with an aggregate score of three-under-par 141.

The side of Sook Hee Yang-Gigi Ash finished with a net score of 69 in the Carolinas Division net two-woman captain’s choice format. The side only received two strokes on the day, so they finished in red numbers even without their strokes. The side of Tess Kirkman-Mary Rhodes posted an even-par 72 to complement the other Colonial CC side, which puts them in first place in the Carolinas Division by one stroke.

Greenville Country Club is the only team representing South Carolina in the championship, but they are representing it well. GCC carded scores of 69 (Hall Bickmann-Patricia Reed) and 73 (Kristen Rooke-Aloma Smith) to finish at two-under-par 142 and solo second place.

Also in red numbers in the Carolinas Division is the Pinehurst Country Club B squad, who finished with scores of 69 (Jean Peters-Sue McDermott) and 74 (Debbie Hockman-Anne Bourne) for a one-under-par aggregate of 143 and third place.

Play will continue on Wednesday, October 31 with a four-ball stroke play format. Teams in the Carolinas Division will be flighted after 36 holes.

The championship will conclude with the Pinehurst alternate shot format on Thursday, November 1. There will be a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start on both remaining days of the championship.
