A three-legged Dalmatian was rescued by firefighters Thursday afternoon when a fire broke out in Southern Pines, but a cat perished in the blaze.

Authorities were dispatched around 3 p.m. to a rental unit on East Manly Avenue.  According to officials, the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, and authorities managed to extinguish the fire before it spread throughout the unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The man who lives at the property, Mark Niewald, was not home when the fire broke out.  When the fire started, a neighbor tried to go into the unit to save the animals but was unsuccessful.

Responding to the scene were Sourthen Pines Police, Moore County EMS, the Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and Cypress Pointe Fire Departments.

According to Mike Cameron, Southern Pines Fire Cheif, emergency responders brought the cat outside first with the cat showing no signs of life.  CPR was performed and oxygen was administered; however, the cat could not be revived.  The firefighters managed to pull the dog out alive from the blaze where the dog was reuinted with his owner.
