The SCC Jazz Band, known as the “Sound of Swing in the Sandhills” for more than 47 years, will continue its summer concert series with “A Swingin’ Summer: Count Basie Meets Cole Porter!” on Monday, July 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in BPAC’s Owens Auditorium, on the campus of Sandhills Community College, 3395 Airport Road, Pinehurst.
The concert will feature signature Basie favorites including “April in Paris,” “Shiny Stockings,” “Blues in Hoss Flat,” and “Orange Sherbet,” along with several Cole Porter selections such as “Begin the Beguine,” “Love for Sale,” and “Let’s Do It,” plus additional tunes.
The band is led by Dr. Larry Arnold, professor emeritus at UNC Pembroke and longtime Aberdeen resident. Among the talented local musicians are the Rev. Dr. Paul Murphy of Southern Pines; Rob Hill, music director at Union Pines High School and former director of the jazz band; and Chris Dunn, executive director of the Arts Council of Moore County.
SCC Jazz Band concerts are free and open to the public. Tickets are required and may be reserved online at ticketmesandhills.com.
BPAC offers concessions for purchase, including wine, beer, soda and snacks. Outside food and drink are not permitted.
