Aberdeen cancels Christmas parade

The Aberdeen Town Board voted Monday to cancel its Christmas parade this year due to limited entries because of coronavirus.

Carthage also canceled its parade. Southern Pines Business Association canceled this year’s Christmas parade and First Eve celebration held annually in downtown Southern Pines.

The Village of Pinehurst made the decision not to hold its traditional Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony due to concerns with anticipated crowd size and COVID-19 mass gathering limitations currently in place.

The Aberdeen Town Board said they will stream its tree lighting on Aberdeen Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page.

A Downtown Christmas European Style Market was approved by Aberdeen Town Board last week to be held on Dec. 5 between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. The style is “more quaint and toned down commercially” than the American style, according to Aberdeen Town Manager Paul Sabiston and will be held at the Knight Street and Tarbell areas.
