Accident claims life of Cameron man

A car accident has claimed the life of a man from Cameron.

The accident happened around 11:15 a.m. Monday morning in the 1300 block of U.S. 1 Business in Cameron. 

Authorities arrived on the scene to find a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer involved in the accident. The driver of the pick-up was trapped for a short period of time as firefighters worked to free him from the vehicle. U.S. 1 was closed for several hours.

A landing zone for a helicopter was set up at the Cameron Elementary School ball field. The patient, Paul Woodell, was taken to the landing zone; however, he coded en route, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol. Moore County EMS routed the patient to Moore Regional Hospital while performing CPR. After arriving at the hospital, he was pronounced deceased.

Woodell lived less than a quarter of a mile from the site of the accident. 

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
