In an effort to improve the craft, the Sandhills Photography Club conducts judging contests on alternating months during the year. After all, what better way to improve than having you images reviewed by a professional.
Even without entering a photo, just attending the meeting and looking at other people’s work while listening to positive feedback, is a great way to learn.
Members are invited to submit their images in advance on a selected topic to be critiqued by a professional photographer. After reviewing each photo on the large auditorium screen during a meeting, the judge provides instructive feedback on each photo, then discloses their overall score based on factors like impact, composition and lighting before.
Awards and recognition go to the photographers that placed the highest in 3 tiers based on points earned from previous competitions.
Rob Byron, of Piedmont Photo located in Fuquay-Varina, will be the guest judge for the February meeting. He has over 40 years of experience, specializing in corporate, commercial, portrait and stock photography.
“I caught the photography bug in high school after taking a photography class.” said Rob “My teacher suggested that I take pictures of young couples during my lunch hour and then sell the pictures to the couples after school. I took his advice, taking daily candids around the school and selling them to the students. The venture was successful enough to keep me in spending money and made me realize that this is what I wanted to do for a living.”
The topic for the next contest, on Monday, February 10, is ‘Anything Old’. The topics are selected 2 years in advance, and made available on their website so members can make plans to capture their images far in advance.
In addition to photo competitions, the club hosts presentations by well-known photographers every other month, conducts educational workshops, and organizes fun photo walks, day trips and outings.
Meetings are held the second Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hannah Marie Bradshaw Activities Center Theatre, The O’Neal School, 3330 Airport Road, Pinehurst.
Only members can enter photos in the competition, but guests are welcome to attend meetings.
