BBB offers the following tips for online shopping:

Check with BBB. It is important to do your homework before purchasing an item online. Always be sure to check out retailers at bbb.org before you shop. Searching a business online with BBB will provide you with a letter grade of the business, history of complaints and verified customer reviews.

Shop with a credit card. In case of a fraudulent transaction, a credit card provides additional protections; it’s easier to dispute charges that you didn’t approve or if you have not received your product. Debit cards, prepaid cards and gift cards don’t provide the same protections as a credit card. It is also important to note that some online money transfer sites, such as PayPal, do offer protections as well.

Read the Fine Print. When shopping online, be sure to take your time and read the fine print before submitting your order. Look for the return policy; although many online orders can be returned for a full refund, others have restocking fees. Some items cannot be returned; know before you buy.

Keep documentation of your order. Save a copy of the order confirmation until you receive the item and are satisfied. Be sure to know and understand the return policy, and keep this documented with your purchase records.
