Betsy Thomas, MSN, R.N., has been recognized as the March 2019 DAISY Award winner for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

Betsy is nurse manager for the med/neuro intensive care unit and the dialysis unit at Moore Regional Hospital.

She was nominated by her employees who say she gives 100 percent of herself to her team and the patients they care for each and every day.

Her nomination reads, “Betsy has instilled in her staff, from day one, to always think and do what is best for our patients. What really makes her stand out from the rest is that she leads by example. We know that she has multiple managerial duties to attend to, but when she knows our unit is in need or, most important, our patients are in need, no matter the circumstance, she takes care of it.

“Not only as a manager, but also as a nurse, she is not told enough how great she is. It is a pleasure to be able to write this nomination for her because she is everything a DAISY should be. She exemplifies FirstHealth’s core purpose every day to care for people.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was established by the Daisy Foundation, a not-for-profit, based in Glen Ellen, Calif. The foundation was started by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.

The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families. Today, there are more than 2,800 health care facilities in all 50 states and 17 other countries honoring their nurses with the DAISY Award.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas, which includes Moore Regional Hospital, Moore Regional Hospital – Richmond, Moore Regional Hospital – Hoke and Montgomery Memorial Hospital, recognizes an extraordinary nurse each month, and has since 2014.
