A 48-year-old bridge in Moore County will be replaced under a new contract.

The N.C. Department of Transportation this month approved a nearly $1.3 million bid from Smith Rowe LLC of Mount Airy to remove a bridge that consists of three crossline drainage pipes under a section of Gurney West Road, southwest of Robbins.

The pipes will be replaced with a reinforced concrete, box-shaped culvert that will have more drainage capacity and better durability.

The contractor can begin in mid-January when the road over Dry Creek will close. The company will have five months to complete the work and reopen the road.
