A local man faces a charge of felony death by vehicle after a female riding in another car died Saturday morning when his pickup truck struck the car she was traveling in.

The female passenger of a Hyundai Elantra was thrown from the vehicle during the impact and died at the scene.

Travis Richard O’Donnell, 36, of Cameron, faces charges in connection to the accident which happened outside of Southern Pines on U.S. Highway 1 North at the intersection with North May Street just before 2 a.m morning.

O’Donnell is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, and unsafe movement by North Carolina Highway Patrol.

O’Donnell was driving a black Ford pickup truck heading north on May Street when he ran off the road and through a stop sign striking the Hyundai, which was heading north on US 1.

The impact sent both vehicles across the median with the Elantra coming to stop at the edge of the median and the pickup truck across the road on the other side. 

The driver of the Elantra was transported to Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.  A passenger in the pickup truck did not require transport by EMS.

The victim was identified as Shamyia Jennings, 24, of Sanford.

O’Donnell was jailed under a $410,000 bond and has a October 23 court date.
