Car slams into telephone pole on U.S. 1

Saturday morning commuters on U.S. 1 were delayed for nearly an hour after a vehicle veered from the road and crashed into a telephone pole. Emergency units were dispatched to a single-vehicle wreck in front of Gary’s Auto Center in Aberdeen around 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14.

The driver of the Toyota RAV-4 was traveling north on U.S. 1 toward Southern Pines when they swerved from the highway, climbed the curb, and slammed into a telephone pole.

A telephone pole is destroyed when a car slammed into it on May 14.

The wreck resulted in a downed telephone pole, substantial damage to the Toyota, and delays in traffic for nearly an hour. Northbound traffic was temporarily shut down while emergency response crews worked to remove the wreckage from the roadway.

According to authorities on the scene, the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and declined transport by EMS to the hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.

The Toyota sustained heavy damage to the front end, and the affected telephone pole was left in splinters.

The Aberdeen Police Department and Aberdeen Fire Department responded to the scene, and Rockwell Towing was on the scene to remove the vehicle and help clear the site of debris.
