A single-vehicle crash on Thanksgiving evening left a toddler hospitalized and the driver in police custody. The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Linden Road near Freeman Way in Pinehurst.Â
According to authorities, the crash occurred when the driver of an SUV veered off the right side of the road multiple times, struck both a tree and a utility pole, crashed through a fence, and overturned.
The SUV’s OnStar system automatically alerted 911, and dispatchers could hear a child crying inside the vehicle during the call. Emergency responders arrived to find the toddler injured, though the extent of the injuries was not immediately released.
Authorities on scene confirmed to Sandhills Sentinel that the child was strapped into a car seat at the time of the crash.Â
The driver of the SUV refused a roadside sobriety test, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He was placed under arrest and transported to the magistrate’s office, where he faces multiple charges.
Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
