Christmas Eve crash claims life

A head-on collision in Carthage resulted in a death on Christmas Eve. The wreck occurred on Highway 15-501 between Medlin Lane and Priest Hill Road.

First responders were called to the scene around 11 a.m. in response to a crash between two vehicles, both of which sustained heavy damage.

The collision occurred when the driver of a Nissan Altima crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Chevrolet Tahoe. The only two people involved in the collision were the drivers of both vehicles. The driver of the Nissan Altima, Dustin Bender, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Chevy Tahoe was transported to Moore Regional Hospital by ambulance. Though her condition is currently unknown, first responders at the scene did not believe she sustained life-threatening injuries, and she was alert and responsive at the time of transport.

Both lanes of traffic were shut down for over an hour and a half while emergency crews responded to the scene. Motorists were rerouted while the scene was cleared, and the debris was cleaned up.
