Moore County is building a recreation center in Carthage at Hillcrest Park and released a video showing what the new center will look like.

The cost of the contract with Harrod and Associates Constructors, Inc. is $5.5 million with construction slated to start by September.

The new facility will be a 22,000 square feet sports complex which will include two gymnasiums, concession area, a large conference room for classes, multipurpose room, bathrooms, and offices.

The recreation center is part of a master plan which includes the newly opened splash pad.

Commissioner Louis Gregory pointed out in their July meeting that this is a Moore County park for all who are in Moore County.

“It is something we should be proud of and will be something that future generations can be proud of,” said Gregory.

Former Moore County Board of Commissioner Larry Caldwell also addressed the board of commissioners on the sports complex.

He stated that we are standing on the shoulders of giants and are fortunate for the support that the public has given the facility project, currently over $650,000 in private money for the new construction.  Half of the funding comes from capital reserves and over $800,000 from sales of properties.

The recreation center is scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
