The Moore County Board of Commissioners heard a presentation on the county’s tax information by the Board of Equalization and Review at its Sept. 21 meeting. The board approved contracts for the county’s new courthouse and waste management and reappointed fire chiefs.
Commissioner Jerry Daeke presented the tax information on the Board of Equalization and Review. Daeke said the tax department had met all goals for the 28th year in a row and had a 99% collection rate. There are 73,318 parcels in Moore County.
Mosley Architects’ contract proposal for the new Moore County courthouse facility and renovations for the project to connect to the existing courthouse was approved.
“They are consistent with the budget presented in February,” Capital Projects Manager Rich Smith said.
The terms of the contract allow adjustment for actual cost of construction versus estimated cost. For example, if the cost of the new building construction is $30 million, and the cost of renovation is $3 million, the architectural firm will be paid $2,385.
The architectural firm will be compensated $58,800 for incorporating the design and construction management of the Boundary Survey, Project Management of the Dowd Road closure, Fred’s parking lot, old firehouse parking lot, and The Connector Street Realignment.
The board approved an engineering/consulting contract with Withers Ravenel, Inc. for tasks associated with the Aberdeen residential waste collection site, including relocation, authorizing funding up to $60,000.
The board reappointed Fire Chief Mike Cameron of the East Region and Fire Chief Rich Lambdin of the Central Region to the Fire Commission for two-year terms set to expire June 30, 2023.
Fire Chief Carlton Cole of the South Region will fill the unexpired term of the late Fire Chief John McIver through June 30, 2022.
James Dunlap is an at-large citizen member who will now serve on the Fire Commission for a two-year term that expires June 30, 2023.
Chief Executive Officer of Sandhills Center Board of Directors Victoria Whitt presented a resolution for a contiguous county realignment.
After Whitt’s presentation, the board adopted the resolution for Anson, Guilford, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, and Richmond counties to assign members to the Sandhills Center Board of Directors. The resolution comes after Davidson and Rockingham counties stopped previous alignments with the center. The resolution will maintain regulations for the membership of 21.
The county commissioners honored Glenda Clendenin who is retiring next week after 35+ years of service as the Director of Elections.
Clendenin earned her state certification in 1997 and her national certification in 1998. She is a native of Moore County and lives in Southern Pines.
The board also voted to observe National 4-H Week on Oct. 3-9. There are 1,213 youth and over 70 volunteers taking part in the county’s 4-H programs. Groups meet in county extension centers and gain hands-on experience for knowledge in life skills to help them become productive members of society.
The commissioners’ next regular meeting is Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Carthage courthouse in the traffic circle.
