The Moore County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved technology upgrades for the Department of Social Services and the Sheriff’s Office.

The commissioners approved $86,000 to purchase 115 replacement computers for DSS. The county replaces computers when they are five years old.

Some of the replaced computers will be donated to non-profits, some sold as surplus, and some will be given to the Carthage Library to replace computers that are 8 to 10 years old.

The sheriff’s office received approval to spend $86,000 to purchase 31 new portable radios. Several years ago, then-Sheriff Neil Godfrey spearheaded the installation of a new Vipre radio system, which was credited with saving lives during Hurricane Florence.

The switchover required the replacement of all existing radio equipment. The county developed a plan to stagger the replacements over several years.

The next board of commissioners meeting is November 19.
