Deputies make arrests in child sex crimes case

Three people were arrested two days after the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division received a report of a sexual assault on a child in the Robbins area.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields said in a news release that Jeremy Scott Sheffield, Gina Sheffield McLeod, and Kelly Jean Steele were arrested by deputies on Sept. 13.

“Detectives conducted multiple interviews and established sufficient probable cause to make multiple arrests,” said Fields regarding the assault case that was reported on Sept. 11. “Following information received, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the Carthage area on September 13.”

Sheffield, 44, of Carthage, was charged with one count of statutory rape of a child by an adult, one count of indecent liberties with a child, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Sheffield was confined to the Moore County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.

McLeod, 55, of Carthage, was charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. McLeod was confined to the Moore County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.

Steele, 39, of Robbins, was charged with two counts of felony child abuse-sexual act-commits/allows. Steele was confined to the Moore County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond.

Authorities did not release the age of the child.

All three suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 23 and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“Anyone with information regarding this or any other case is asked to contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip Line at 910-947-4444,” said Fields.
