Dog dies in Pinewild house fire

A fire after a possible explosion in Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst displaced a family on Saturday night.

A neighbor says he heard a loud explosion, followed by smaller explosions. He looked across the street to see the house on Pinewild Drive in flames.

First responders arrived at the two-story home fully engulfed in flames. The heaviest damage was at the garage of the house, where at least one car was destroyed.

According to Pinehurst Police on the scene, no one was home at the time of the explosion. A dog was killed in the fire. When the homeowner arrived on the scene, he became overwhelmed and was cared for by paramedics.

The fire was challenging to put out due to an accelerant in the garage. Pinehurst Police say the homeowner has model rockets, and that chemicals used were in the garage.

The Pinehurst Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the family.

Pinehurst Fire Department, Whispering Pines Fire Department, Seven Lakes Fire Department, West End Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, Aberdeen Fire Department, Eastwood Fire Department, Carthage Fire Department, Eagle Springs Fire Department, Pinehurst Police Department, Fort Bragg Fire Department, Moore County Public Safety, and Moore County EMS all responded to the scene.
